PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
I
want to thank all of you who attended our Biergartens during the fall and
winter months. All of these events were a huge success and attendance
was phenomenal. We are grateful to all who have shown their support
and we look forward to continued success with our outdoor Biergartens
beginning May 15th.
Please read your newsletter and visit our website for information regarding
all of our upcoming events.
Thanks again to all,
Jim Boeckmann, President
ARRANGEMENTS COMMITTEE MESSAGE
Dear Members,
he Arrangements Committee has set the 2011
calendar. As promised, the committee scheduled the Taste of Germany
for April, 2011 and I know this will be another huge success and a lot of
hard work for all involved.
The trip to Milwaukee has been
cancelled, but we are trying to arrange a trip to the German Festival in
Toledo, OH in late August. Although this trip is in the planning
stages, if you have any questions, please e-mail me at
patsys@mwmcorp.com.
Looking forward to seeing all of you at our outdoor Biergartens,
Patsy Stout, Chairman
TO ALL THOSE CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY
IN MAY OR JUNE
Wishing you all kinds of wonderful things………not just for your Birthday BUT
ALWAYS!!!!!!!
LADIES’ AUXILIARY NEWS
Our Card Parties have
been well attended and from this income we have been able to set up a fund
for the new walk in cooler that is planned for the Pavilion. So far
$2,500.00 has been set aside for this project. Thanks to all the
Ladies who work so very hard to make this possible. Our next Card
Parties are scheduled for May 6th and June 3rd
and are from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.
As spring turns to summer why don’t you all spend one evening a month at our
meeting? We have lots of fun playing Bingo after our short meeting.
Of course we always have a wonderful dessert and coffee, and I am currently
working on having a gentleman from the Police Department come in to give us
a mini-lesson on self protection and defense. Our meetings are
scheduled for the 3rd Monday of each month and will take place May 17th
and June 21st. The meetings begin at
7:00pm and last until we are Bingo’d out.

GERMANIC HERITAGE AUXILIARY NEWS
Our wine tasting of February 28 was an outstanding success with about 150
eager participants trying six different Riesling wines! We want to
extend many thanks to Jim and David Lindsey and their associates from
Schmitt Söhne Wines, for making this event possible. I think everyone
discovered a new favorite wine, and be sure to tell our bar steward, Bruce
Zimmerman, which ones you liked so he can stock them at the Club bar.
Also, thanks to all of you members who attended and brought such yummy
refreshments to share. We had a real feast in addition to enjoying so
many good Riesling wines.
Our next Sunday Series program will
be on Sunday, June 27th, at 2:30 pm. We will show the long-awaited
fourth, and last, segment of the Germans in
America series. Part 4 is titled, “A
People Disappears” and talks about the Americanization of German immigrants
and how they became part of the “melting pot” while trying to retain their
cultural identity. No reservations are required for this program, but
if you have questions, please call Vicky Ullrich at 459-6820 or e-mail
ultravic@bellsouth.net. Thanks and hope to
see you on June 27th.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC COMMITTEE
The GAC chorus has been practicing very hard for our Spring Concert on May
23rd and I know everyone is going to enjoy our musical selections as well as
the dinner immediately following.
On behalf of our entire membership, I would like to thank our
director, Justin Romney, Pianist, Louise Bornwasser, and all members of the
chorus for their time and efforts to promote German-American culture with
our yearly concerts. All of you are very much appreciated.
In closing, I would like to wish singer, Barbara Schreck, a safe trip
to Germany. Even though Barbara knew she wouldn’t be in town for this
year’s Spring Concert, she never missed a rehearsal and I can assure you she
will be missed. Thanks again to all for another great season.
Patsy Stout, Chairman
HERE’S TWO MEMBERS’ INTERPETATION OF THE WINE TASTING
When the Schmitt Söhne Wine reps approached the Club about hosting a wine
tasting for our members, they had envisioned just a few people standing
around at the bar sampling their products. They didn’t suspect that we
would pack the hall!
The reps began with a brief history of their company and wine
operation and then gave us an easy-to-understand lesson in “how to read a
wine label”. They provided each one of us with our own “tasting sheet”
for making notes about each wine, our personal preferences, which foods
would complement the wine well, what we could learn from the label, etc.Because
of the large number of people we had for the tasting, the reps served us our
samples at our tables, making things go very smoothly as they poured 6
sample rounds for everyone. Starting with the driest wine, each round
was progressively sweeter, a factor of when the grapes were harvested, among
other things.
After the last tasting round, they gave out a lot of door prizes
featuring “The Little German”—playing cards, posters and aprons. These
prizes were handed out by our own version of “The Little German”, Vicky
Ullrich, dressed up and playing the part wonderfully.
Everyone was encouraged after the tasting to submit suggestions for
the wines they would love to see the club carry.
They will be decanted instead of being sold by individual bottles.
It was a great event and a lot of fun!

MEMBERS WHO ARE SICK, INJURED OR RECOVERING
It has been brought to my
attention by Hans Probst that John Sappara has been
gradually improving over the months. John is now able to assist his
wife Hidegard in getting himself in and out of bed and chair, help to get
himself into their vehicle for transportation and has even been able to
assist with his daily care.
The Club would like to wish
Doris Hockenberry a
speedy recovery from her recent illness.
And finally, it is with great sadness that I announce the death of
Doris Schaefer. I’m sure I speak for the whole club
when I send our condolences to her friends and family.
A BRIEF NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
First, we as Club members want
to thank Gwen A. Carlson for redoing the Gerrits Memorial Hall sign to honor
both Albert and Elsie Gerrits.
Thank you very much Gwen and I must say that the new version just
really seems to roll off the tongue nicely and I think you did a beautiful
job.
Second, this is just a reminder to contact me via e-mail (mlzimmerman@bellsouth.net)
or phone (502-635- 7380) concerning any information you would like to have
placed in the newsletter—remember it is a CLUB newsletter, it’s here for all
of us.
